Fishtanktodd - good advice and good tips.
I clean/rinse my canister monthly in tank water. I also push a lot of water around in my tank using additional powerheads. Just added a maxi-jet 900 this weekend.
I too dont use carbon except if I am trying to remove meds. I do, however, use Purigen. Expensive, but you can regenerate it. It removes organics only.
I also use poly fibre for polishing. Way cheaper than pet brands. I rinse it out, and after a couple of months, replace it.
Oh, and as a personal "invention" I use loofahs as the first prefilter in my canister. I'm not sure its effective as a prefilter however.

I rinse my filters usually once a week, I have an aqueon 30g and a 10g filter running I'll rinse the 10g out after every water change and the 30g once a week I just run them under warm water, yes I know many of you are thinking "what are you doing" Well the 30g filters has a biological slot on it where all the beneficial bacteria lives and plus a lot of Bacteria lives in the sand, on rocks etc. so I'm never worried about a mini cycle with what now I do things

Carbon is needed for like tinted water, makes ur water more clearer, everyone knew that. I have to use lots of carbon for my 180g cause NLS food always tinted my water orangey cause its their staple food. But for black water tanks like most aquarist in here have, it will clean it right out.
