In the past I haven't had a problem with algae, but within the past few weeks I have noticed excessive algae growth in my filter. It's a 10 gallon tank with an internal filter and there is a gooey green substance (which I assume is algae) covering the filter cartridge.
Any ideas on how to eliminate and prevent this algae growth? Thanks!

If you could snap a picture, that would help ID the algae for sure! I think it is cyanobacteria or blue and green algae, as sometimes it is called! There are excess nutrients in the filter! How often do you rinse it out? To eliminate it you can rinse the cartridge out in used tank water twice a week for a while!
