Green water often gets a bad name but it has many benefits. I will talk about the causes and benefits of green water here.
CAUSES
Two very important things are need for green water to happen. Excessive light in the form of sunlight or artificial light and phosphates in our water. Nearly all tap water already has phosphates in it. So most of the time many people get green water by accident because there tank is near a window or there lighting is too much for there tank. And phosphates can be at higher levels if excess plant nutrients are added to a tank as well. Green water is a type of a very tiny single-celled algae which grows suspended in the water of aquarium tanks. This algae can rapidly multiply so that the water turns a dark green in color which can become almost impossible to see through.
BENEFITS
As green water indicates that the water is healthy and good for fish. Algae provides nutrients for newly hatched fry as it can provide an alternative food source, especially small fry from egg layers who may sometimes survive only on green water. It indirectly acts as a color enhancer as it contains natural color enhancers like chlorophyll fucoxanthin, astaxanthin and other carotenoids.
Infusoria will also develop within the algae on which the fish will feed. These 100% natural live feeds help develop the intense coloration of your fish and will feed fry also.
These natural foods helps promote the growth of fins and outer skin. Its a natural cleanser and oxygenator. The other main benefit of algae is that it helps clean the water in the tank of organic waste and produces oxygen. Green algae is, after all, a plant.
I am currently maintaining a green water tank and the fish in that tank are very healthy, vibrant, lively and colorful.
