I'm looking to treat my fish with something other than the OTC treatments I've tried. I have an outbreak of fungus in my tank after a three week quarantine with 3 different meds, now it's a 90gallon planted. What would anyone with experience with either methylene blue or malachite do in my shoes. I'm looking at this as sterilizing my tank. From what I've found on either one I'm leaning more towards the methylene blue. I also found this article fish-etc.com/knowledge/tank-maintenance-tips and was wondering if it made sense to anyone. Anyways I just couldn't find anything concrete on what I have to do to the tank ie removing plants etc, I know it will kill the beneficial bacteria so I'll have to cycle the tank again. Any help would be appreciated

Malachite green is for parasite control and methylene blue is for bacteria and fungal infections. I have used methylene blue when breeding angels, to keep the eggs from fungus. There were no ill affects to the biological filter or the plants in the tank. It did stain everything blue, silicone and tubing and everything else. I never experienced any problems with either med, when used properly. Just remember to pull out the carbon from the filter because it removes the meds from the water.

Ok thanks, I ended up just using fungus clear tabs as I had a hard time finding methylene blue in London and it seems to be working, the fins are unclamped and the visible fungus is gone but one of my angels seems to have a bad case of fin rot only on his tail fin, all of his other fins look perfect. Has anyone ever had this problem? I hoping the second dose deals with him.

I have on occasion had to use Methylene blue to treat fungus on fish in a tank. I have also used it to treat fungus on pond fish. I have found painting the treat areas with Methylene Blue as opposed to treating the water has been quite effective. Removing the fish from the tank/pond coupled with painting the effected area and finally placing in a med tank has been effective for me.

Occasionally if you're stuck, you can ask your pharmacist for the methylene blue. They may or may not let you have it.
