With the kids all getting some kind of device that hooks into the wifi in our home we're having problems keeping everyone connected which is causing fights in the house. After spending all the money getting the kids these things for Christmas it feels like a waste is everyone can't use them. So I'm looking for help. I know nothing about computers and how the wifi works so I can't do much to help them out. Does someone here have any ideas or would someone be able to come out and look at it for me. We were using Bell and just switched to cogeco at the advice of the Bell tech that came out to the house. I did get an extender for the wifi but that doesn't seem to help at all. Should I buy a new router or modem? I just have what came with cogeco

I'm not Larry the cable guy but I would say your best bet would be to replace your router. Usually the modem you get with your service can handle all ranges of speed that you would get in a normal household. I use to have issues with my Wifi connection but after I replaced my router to a much better model I haven't had any problems. The next step from there would be to get faster plan. Also make sure you don't have any splitters on your cable lines, that effectively cuts your speed in half.

I agree with Mitch, you need a better router! If it is the Cogeco wireless modem you have, and use the wifi from that, you will not be able to do anything if more than two devices are in use! Their tech told me this! Now I run a much better router, still not the best, and we can all watch movies on different devices! Yes I did test this!LOL! You also have to find a central location for the router to get everywhere in the house! Especially if you have i-beams in your floors and metal in your walls! My house is metal frame so I got wifi problems as well! Had to hardwire my tv and Xbox 360!

I havent had problems with my router up until this year. Like you I am getting disconnected and unplugging and plugging back my router 2 to 3 times a day. So hopefully a new router will solve the problem but I think the service providers in the area have changed things because Ive spoken to several people having the same problem regardless of whether they were Bell DSL or Cogeco Cable. I think the stock routers or older routers cant keep all these devices connected at once and crap out. Ive heard good things about nighthawk routers as well but they are pricey.

Can also try assigning each device with it's own IP address but as others have said you'll need to have a new router..

When your saying hooked into do you mean directly to your router by wire or wireless? Getting a wireless router will allow you to hook up many devices wirelessly at the same time. But depending on your bandwidth the more devices you have the more laggy the connection. More bandwidth speed = less lag. Also a good router with higher connection speed. Wireless n is better than wireless g. If you need some to take a look I'm sure I could help.

The kids all have tablets, laptops, gaming systems or smart tvs that connect through wifi. I got a night hawk router which has helped a lot but I'm clueless on how to go through all the settings on the thing. I've even tried while watching a YouTube video on how to do it but my menu is always different then the video.

Anytime you can come by Jeff just let me know. I can use all the help I can get. I also don't have a computer or laptop so you might have to wait till my son comes over on the weekends

In the meantime do not throw out your old router! You might need to boost the signal upstairs/downstairs! Jeff can show you how, but you will need a cable to connect the two routers!
