So i was at a local pet store and I was browsing the fish section with my wife and daughter when in my ear i hear a conversation that grabs my attention. So i peek over and watch a clueless lady and bf looking to buy fish. The worker asks them how big their tank is and they reply with "big", "this big" with her arms depicting the size of the tank. They are asking how many fish they could have and so on. As the worker walks away to go and get somethin i ask the lady and her bf if their tank is cycled and the response i got was "huh" and i proceeded to say that everything you buy right now will be dead in 24-48hrs. I proceeded to tell them to do a little research because unless they get a cycled tank running first they won't have any fish survive for over a month. The worker came back ready to get fish for them and these people went ahead and bought a bunch of fish. Yes i do know that you can cycle a fish tank with live fish but when the response is "huh" then i knew these people had no idea what they were doin.
just some observations i make when i'm out and about that just bugs me....

oh I know that feeling all to well. I have had similar experiences. I wish people would do there research before putting helpless fish in harms way. I also get very bothered when at certain stores they don't know how to sex fish or don't know the answer to a question and instead of admitting that they make something up. That my two cents

you can do fish cycle off the bat but i wouldnt be putting anymore then 2 fish in but personally i wait about 2 weeks to start a fish cycle. Some people just are not educated when it comes to fish and its sad that some of these people are working at stores that sell fish

Even those that know something about fish are often pushed by store owners/management to sell fish anyway because they are after all a business first. It saddens me that animal sales are a source of income for anyone, because it often puts them in a position where they choose cash over the animal's best interests.

stuff like this pisses me off, some people are soo lazy that they cannot even take the time to do some research in order to do something properly and humanely. I bet these people you saw will be done with this hobby in a few months due to frustration and fish dying but I say good riddance if you can't take the time to research

I always preferred to advise people properly and honestly when I worked in the pet industry. You may have to turn down the first sale, but you can always sell them set-up supplies and insure a repeat customer by helping them stay in the hobby longterm. Retail has forgotten about the longterm loyal customer in favour of the impulse-buyer. There are some small business owners however, that remember to do it the old-fashioned way.

What I can't figure out is the fact you told them..."It needs to be cycled." So I'm sure they where thinking nothing of it becouse the store didn't say anything further

This hobby can be very disturbing at times.
Way too many people just constantly purchase livestock to replace the dead ones. The idea that it doesn't need to be this way seems not only foreign but completely irrelevant. No doubt you were in the wrong for butting in and they will go with what the "professionals" tell them. Cycling means nothing to most and on top of that many are just too impatient for such a concept. Ever try explaining a Quarantine Tank to someone? Or a hospital tank? Most people would rather spend $50 buying one poor fish after the next compared to investing in doing something right.
I simply do not purchase anything from stores which I know only want the sale. There are stores in this city that want you coming back every few weeks. So if everything survives that is a problem for them. They might even throw a free fish at you once in a while to make it seem like they care about you. Truth is they paid pennies on the dollar for what you are buying in most cases.
Sorry for the rant but you are right. It pisses me off too.

Everyone one of you make a valid point. I am just glad there are people like us doing it right. I have butt in many times at some store that I will not name to correct wrong information being given. And doing it most the time to simply for the fishes benefit and the store employees education. Keep up the good work everyone.
