Hello everyone! My name is Holly. I am a 24-year-old graphic design student, and after starting (and subsequently leaving) a job at a pet store I ended up rescuing a better fish that was not in good condition. I had always been obsessed with the ocean and fish growing up, but could never understand why the fish I kept were dying... This little betta fish (with the help of the internet) taught me a lot about my past mistakes and how to properly take good care of my new friend. I have now successfully cured him of velvet and now helping him through fin rot. I aspire to get much further into the hobby. Most notably I am hoping to learn how to create the best environment for Pygmy Sunfish (Elassoma Okefenokee to be exact) to hopefully keep and breed as well as get further into aquascaping and plant care. Looking forward to meeting you all in the messages, and having some people to geek out over fish with! -Holly

Neat to find another graphic design student in the aquarium hobby, even if I only did 2 semesters of my education, lol. (St. Claire? If so, are Mike, Dan, and Nick still the main professors?)
Anyhow, welcome to the forum! Don't be shy about posting any questions you have, along with sharing your experiences! Show us your tank(s) and your fish, we'd love to see!
We have our monthly club meeting coming up tomorrow if you're interested, where we're going to hear Dave Pauls talk to us about his Rainbowfish hobby (though I understand that tomorrow is rather short notice, lol).
We also have a Toronto Bus Trip planned for next month where we're going to visit a whole bunch of the larger fish stores in the GTA. At $25 a seat, it's worth going just for the experience, even if you don't want to buy anything, though the trip does make for a very long day.

It crazy to find another graphic designer! Are you still with it, or have you moved on? I am currently at the end, just in the middle of my internship right now. So I’m almost free! Dan Mike and Nick are still the main teachers, however Nick only teaches first year and maybe one class in second year. I think he’s actually the program coordinator now. I definitely won’t be shy if anything comes up and once I’m a little more happy with my set ups I will be sure to post pictures for everyone to see. I actually saw that you guys had a meeting tomorrow, and I would love to come, however I’m working through the flu right now and I don’t think getting everyone sick would be a good way to introduce myself, hahaha. When the next one comes around I would love to join. The Toronto trip also sounds quite fun, however going to Toronto with people I don’t know seems a little too outside my comfort zone for now - but maybe in the future I could tag along Thank you very much for the invites! I do hope to go to the next meeting at Cramdons though.

Hello Holly!
Welcome to the forum!
Well you definitely stumbled onto a great place to find information about the aquarium hobby! You mentioned you worked at a pet store, if it had fish you probably know all of us by now! There is a lot of knowledge on this forum. Between our members, there are great aquascapers, cichlid enthusiasts, catfish collectors, planted tank advocates, and so on, so forth!
It is too bad you do not feel comfortable enough to go on the bus trip with us, since there is a better chance to see a pigmy sun fish in person, in the GTA than around here!

Haha I understand the trepidation and I wouldn't be comfortable in your shoes either. I had to fight my social anxiety to get to my first meeting, but there's a bit of comfort in knowing that everyone here shares one hobby in common.
I'm sad to say I didn't continue to pursue the path of Graphic Design. I'm good at putting someone else's ideas onto paper/screen, sure, but my own creativity is... broken, and I'm easily exhausted by people who don't know what they want.
I sold illustration commissions for a few years, but eventually burnt out, and haven't done much since.

Sadly, I while I worked there, they weren't carrying any fish as their tanks were apparently broken. The location always also in LaSalle, I'm not sure how many of you might frequent a lackluster fish supply place One day I probably will go with you guys if you plan another trip. However, right now I don't have the confidence to keep pygmy sunfish and I doubt I could keep myself from buying a pair if I saw the cute little guys in person! haha I will keep them soon after I learn more about them.

I had a feeling, no worries! Creativity can definitely be hard to pull out of yourself. And believe me, I get sick of clients not knowing what they want also haha

Welcome to the Forum! I'm the Jet Setting Member here whom spends more time in Hotels and Planes and his own home. I freelanced Graphic Design for a year or two in Saskatoon but moved on but do miss "I'm not sure that is what I want... each time... for months on end..."
