How are you all staying inspired in the hobby? No auctions or a bus trip. The local fish stores carry the basic fish and some odd balls sometimes but it is nothing like the bus trip or a good auction. I know the other people in my house don't care when I talk about my tanks so there is no one to show them off to. You can't really have someone come over without it feeling a bit awkward because stupid covid is always in the back of your mind. So what are you all doing to keep things fresh and interesting in your hobby? If this goes on much longer I might just have a fire sale out my front door. Masks and social distancing of course lol.

My interest is sort of waning right now. Until the big changes in April my tank is going to be stuck in stasis, good part is, in April, I can finally set forth on my grandest project yet which should fire up the old creative juices.
I am used to be alone all the time Les, for me, I have been training for this my whole life.

I find Iโm watching more youtube and other forms of social media to see ads the time. Only good thing about COVID is it has allowed for more time to work on projects in the fish room. I agree though, I am starting to get overrun with fry - was hoping by 2021 we could at least do a small swap or something but the current trend isnโt looking promising.

Iโm also watching a lot more YouTube videos than before. Not just for the fish but also to see what updates I can do on my setup.
I also acquired a few fish at the beginning for the pandemic and some recently as well to keep it interesting. Iโm getting overrun with plants. I also had quite a few fry, however I traded them in. Now I am only slightly overrun... ๐

i'll be 100 here and say that's it been a struggle.. I've hit up a few of the local area stores and it's brought a new meaning to the word "depresssing" and ask myself again why did i even waste my time..
what channels or videos are you guys watching these days... I know people i used to watch have long been pushed to the side.. not really into their videos much anymore.

Ya I am trying not to buy much right now besides the essentials, maybe a few new filters or whatnot right now. Couple of the channels I have been enjoying are: Fishman - does a lot of DIY stuff and explains it well, but his page isn't the easiest to search Michael's Fishroom - not a huge guppy person but I enjoy his commentary and business approach to the hobby The Fish Nerd - he's resetting up his fishroom so always interesting to follow that process Jadren Aquatics - has some good fishroom tours and is currently setting up a selling facility as a diversification to his small business Aquarium Co-op - just listening to the livestreams and rewatching some of the fishroom tours to get ideas of how to make my life easier There is probably others I just can't think of - definitely don't watch all the videos for these channels but I find some of their videos entertaining.

I know what you mean, I have been slipping out to Chatham and London recently. I asked a certain store if they had Amano Shrimp in stock, still nothing in any form of a reply. That's ok, I went up to Chatham and bought them. In fact, Living Things has a lot of neat fish again, a full tank of Pencilfish (N.beckfordi) amongst other things... including some nice Discus.
Green Aqua mainly but even they are getting a bit stale.

So today I decided to redo all my lights to LED strips. While I was doing this, I was looking at the tanks and plants very closely and noticed that all my tanks have undesirable algae of one kind or other. So this will be a great project to research and experiment on! Starting next week Iโll increase the fertilizer in four thanks while not changing water for two weeks. And another four tanks just increase the water changes. This will let me know if my ferts are out of balance or not. Any thoughts on this?

Not changing the water will increase Fert levels in the tank and actually spur larger outbreaks. In four of the tanks, drop your fert dosage or stop altogether. That would be a smarter control experiment. Continue with water changes.

No one accused me of being smart. ๐
The purpose of the increased nutrient is to see if I can spur plant growth to outcompete the algae. Just something to do. I could also just zap the algae with H2O2 but that is no fun! ๐

Remember algae will also thrive with the extra nutrients. What type of plants are in those tanks? Fast Growers?

Ok, that stuff grows like the weed it is. Sounds like an interesting experiment.

Hey all, this Covid thing has been a bit of a drag but making it positive. I picked a few Discus at the beginning and middle of the Covid stuff. Been growing them out with my young kids involvement. They have been taking a liking with the daily water changes. Plus they get to feed them while I am at work. I purchased a large stock tank and I am going to set it up in the spring with some plants and filtration for an outdoor pond with the kids. Possibly add some Koi etc to the stock bin. Just need to find a good source for water plants. I am located in East Windsor. Hope everyone else is doing well.
