Looking for peoples experiences with whiteworm cultures. I've had great success but also some epic failures.
Here's basically what I do:
I start off with a shoebox size container (plastic)and add organic potting soil. Then I dampen it with water and add starter culture of whiteworms. I then dampen some bread and add to top if top soil. Now when the culture is new there are usually not enough worms to eat all the bread so change the bread every few days or it will get moldy. After the culture is established they will eat all the bread. MY problem is sometimes the culture explodes with worms and they over produce. And the soil get to wet and the culture crashes. What are your experiences.

I did basically the same but there was never an explosion of worms. On one occasion I turned over the soil which they didn't like and I think the culture almost crashed.
I heard that they like colder temps so I'm trying mine out in the fridge for now. In addition to the bread I've just started adding yoghurt and algae wafers.
I'll update after a few weeks.

les never used dirt with white worms, here's what I did :plastic container, loony size white bread, not crust, moisten bread, bread should last two days, repeat only if bread is gone once a week restart colony let me know if this works for you.

So you don't use any form of substrate, they just live in and with the bread you feed them.

Whenever I produced them in the past, if I had an abundance, I'd start a few "starter cultures" and sell them. You can also freeze them. I used to make white worm, micro worm, and BBS ice cubes all the time... Just don't accidently toss em in your glass and ruin your scotch. Cheers. DJ

Update. The culture was going extremely slow in the fridge, so I've been keeping it at room temps again for a little over a week. Worm growth is increasing rapidly.
However there are a lot of tiny white things in clusters. They do move. Are they baby worms, or some other nasties?

Yes, they are clusters of tiny white worms. A very good sign. Mine have really started to take off. Still have not tried Steve's method but plan to soon.

Wow. My population has exploded. I'm getting enough to feed both my 75 and 90g tanks every day!

Make sure you harvest then everyday. Either use them , freeze them or toss them .If you don't some worms will begin to die and will contaminate the whole culture and it will crash. Even start another culture in case this one goes bad. I know what you mean by explode, lol. It's amazing how fast they reproduce when the culture really gets going.

I got mine from another hobbyist in another club. I no longer have it going but plan on visiting him soon to get another starter culture.
