Being into recycled tanks as I am, I have come across a few tanks that need to have their black plastic frames replaced. If you have ever had this problem, you know that it is quite difficult to get a frame in the size you need when you need it! Online there is an american dealer called GlassCages.com who sells the frames cheaply, but you have to buy a minimum amount of goods before they will ship and their shipping is nasty to Canada. When it was all said and done replacing the top of a 20 gallon tank frame was 75.00. Def. not worth the trouble! Anyway, I was contemplating fabricating something out of wood but then I realized that many of the chemicals needed to seal the wood to prevent rot would be toxic to my fish. Steel would be nice, but I worry about sharp edges. Finally while I was complaining about this at my local fish store the manager suggested I use black waterproof duck tape. I dismissed the idea at first thinking it would look crummy, but without a better suggestion I decided to give it a go. I found black Gorilla brand Duck tape at Can. Tire and folded a strip over the top edge all the way around. Then I wrapped a band of the tape around the top, trimming it off. I have to say, it is hard to tell at a glance that it is not plastic trim, and it really covers up those sharp edges well so my kids don't get a nasty cut from the raw glass. I will post some pics soon, but I just thought I would share this handy tip for a common tank problem.
