I got a peice of drift wood attached suction cups to the back, tied some very small Java fern to the wood and stuck it to the back glass. Gives a great 3D effect, the fish like to hide under the ledge

Best idea I seen in a long time. I really like it.

How did you attach the suction cups?

Nice idea. I noticed that Petco in Michigan did a similar thing. Very clever. Looks great too! Now you need to start producing those for all of us.

They are suction cups from a heater, so they have the 2 arms that stick out to snap around the heater. I drilled 2 holes into the drift wood for each suction cup, just the right size and location and pushed the arms about an inch into the drift wood. They seem to hold nice and tight

Thanks. I think it will look good when the java fern grows, with all the roots hanging down below

It's what they call the 3-D water background. I bought it at Ruffins but I have seen it at other shops to, I know Sam's also has it. The other side is Black with drift wood

The background is outside of the tank right? I've been meaning to take a stab at making an in-tank background.

Yes on the outside, just the regular stick on kind.Yes I have wanted to do an in tank background also. JG have you seen pictures of the one that Joe did from Sam's ? Sam's sells an expanding spray foam (fishy safe) that you can mould in to what ever you want and it turns black when it dries. Joe told me he put a peice of plastic egg create on the back of the tank to give the foam something to cling to and just sprayed the foam shaped it and let it dry. All done. Sound easy and it looked great. I think you would lay the tank on its back when spraying the foam and letting it dry

Sounds interesting. A friend completed one of these backgrounds a number of years ago in a shell dweller tank and it was quite nice. It was published on the Cichlid Forum - www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/diy_aquarium_background3.php I think I'll need a spare tank to play with and a fish room to host it before I can start such a project.
