I have a patch of blue green algae starting to grow in my substrate. I had an issue with BGA before but it more less cleared it self up, I would rather not wait and see this time because it is growing around the base of some of my plants. Has anyone had to deal with this stuff before, any tricks, tips or suggestion?

if its the front bottom edge of the tank, I've heard that a strip of electrical tape to block the light works. If its on top of the substrate I've used peroxide successfully but it hurt my stem plants.

I have found hydrogen peroxide to be the most effective, just watch how much you add and do a waterchange right about 15 minutes after.

did this with my java fern but put it in a separate container let it sit in there , killed all the black beard algea also kill the leaves of the plant but only the leaves that were heavily covered now I can pull dead leaves off and return to tank

I'll give that peroxide a shot, its still only on the substrate so hopefully it won't harm my plants. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I think I used a 50:50 dilution with water, then syringed it over the area. There's a post somewhere on the web titled "one, two punch strategy for algae" or something like that. It has full instructions. As Admin says, water change essential. I'd recommend a double water change since almost all my stem plants fragmented into bits after treatment. If I recall correctly my apistos didn't care for it either.

And you should turn off your filter when you do it as you don't want to kill and beneficial live bacteria colonies in there.
