I am writing on behalf of my nephew who belongs to the club. He lost his entire cichlid collection yesterday and today. He's devastated and insult to injury it's his birthday today. We can't figure what killed every fish in three different tanks but the obvious. We have medicated all the tanks but unfortunately he lost all but one fish, a Pleco, and a mystery snail. They did do a water change the night before, I keep thinking a contaminated water jug or high chlorine in their water (Wheatley water). (I want to note that my nephew is well educated on aquarium care and has the outmost care not to contaminate his aquariums or supplies, he has kept these fish healthy and vibrant for the last year.) The fish I saw alive were showing signs of flared gills and "breathing" fast before passing quickly. I want to restock his aquariums, Denny and I have a few extra cichlids to give him, maybe some other members can help him out also? I am just worried about the water, should they restart or keep cycling? If the fish, Pleco and snail survive do they medicate them and quarantine them? Do they carry the disease or does the water? Or both? I am confused...my main concern here is that I want to restock my nephews tanks but in no way do I want to kill more fish. Any advice appreciate. Thanks.

Wow guys this awful. So sorry to here this. Well I can tell you its not the water. I live in Wheatley and i have done water changes and testing with no issues. This could be many causes, was something like a aresol sprayed in the house or something else airborne that could get in the tanks ? I know febreeze for example is very toxic to fish. This sounds like poisoning. Something got in the water. Were any new rocks added to the tanks ? To die so quickly disease seems unlikely. Let work down the listed eliminating possible causes as we go. I strongly suggest the tanks be thoroughly cleaned and start over. As much work and disappointment as this is. The cause maybe lingering in the tanks. I know poisoning work quickly as I have seen it happen first hand. Entire tank of fish wiped out in less than a hour. Now this is just my option but I would like to narrow down possible causes. And yes I would quarantine the snail and pleco and monitor there condition for the time being. We are here to help. The club is behind you.

Monica, I feel so bad for my little buddy in the fish club. When the tanks are up and running again I would like to contribute to the re-stocking effort. Where their is disappointment their is always opportunity. This could be a good time to start fresh and get the right fish to really make his tanks pop. Please let me help. I also think this is some sort of accidental poisoning. It happens to the best of us.

Les is so right. This is an opportunity to start fresh, choosing new combinations of inhabitants. If he wants young boesemani's I can give him a trio.

Sorry to hear about your nephews losses! Unfortunately the only thing I can offer is moral support since I do not have cichlids! Hope everything turns out for the best and he will re-bounce from this stronger than ever!
Merry Christmas to all!

You are all amazing! Bless you all and merry Christmas!!! I will be seeing him tomorrow and will show him these posts. He will cheer up for sure! He loves this club and is doing good at it, a lesson learn I guess? I will sit with him tomorrow and he'll write you all back. Thank you all so much. You don't realize how much this is a blessing for my family.

I want to thank you all for the advice, guppyguy I am confident now that it is not the water knowing you have tested the Wheatley water. I am starting to think aerosol spray was the culprit, their tanks have no lids and my sister did a thorough house cleaning the night of the water change in anticipation of my nephews birthday yesterday. I think they will need to get lids on their tanks, empty them, clean the "poison" out, fill fresh, start cycling and in that time he can choose what he would like to restock. Perhaps we could have a meeting topic on common toxins that can lead to such a catastrophy? Again thank you all so much! Happy holidays.

Sorry to hear of your nephew's loss of his fishes. Is it only cichlids he's looking for? If so, Rift Lake, South American, etc. Or is he looking to start a community tank? Let us know so we can determine how to help. If you could also provide the tank dimensions that would help in determining if we have an appropriate lid and/or cover for his tanks.

It was no problem helping out Monica. Just glad we found out what the issue was so it can be prevented. These kind of accidents happen. But when the tanks are ready after cycling we will be there to help get things back on track. Merry Christmas and enjoy your holidays with peace of mind.

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss - he might want to try to just keep some styrofoam on the top of his tank to help prevent any other poisons from seeping into the aquarium (I am doing it right now because I am currently building a custom lid). If he likes, I have some red zebra fry he could have and I am hoping my kenyi breed soon so down the road he can have some of those as well. Let me know when he gets his aquarium back in working order and he can send me a PM. I hope your family has a Merry Christmas!

Hi Everyone, sorry for leaving you all on a hook I've been sick and not very technical. Update; they lost all their fish, not one survivor. They are looking to move out of their house ASAP due to black mould, so they have cleaned the tanks and are waiting to move first before putting them back up. They have a lil turtle on the go atm Denny and I got them for Christmas, but Blake desperately misses his fish, especially his large angel fish we rescued so he is very excited to get moved and his tanks back up. Denny showed him all your posts and support and he truly felt blessed. Thank you all! Happy holidays.
