Windsor Aquarium Society Breeders Award Program

The Windsor Aquarium Society Breeders Award Program promotes the captive breeding of fish and invertebrates. The Breeders Award Program is not a competition. It is an exciting way to encourage members to breed fish and invertebrates and to share that knowledge.
Each species spawned are worth points with the more difficult species awarded a higher point value.


Rules:

1. There need to be 6 or more healthy fry.
2. There are exceptions for fish with low hatch rates or spawns.
3. The fry need to be free of any disease or defects. ( balloon fish are not allowed)
4. The parents must be in the possession of the member and the spawning must take place at the member’s home.
5. The spawning must be witnessed by the B.A.P. chairmen or someone he designates.
6. Spawns must be witnessed during their first week and again at 60 days.
7. Pictures are acceptable with permission of the B.A.P. chairperson only.
8. B.A.P. Forms must be filled out and are available on our website and The Windsor and Essex County Aquarium Forum.
9. Windsor Aquarium Society members will never lose their points due to inactivity and can return to the program at any time and continue where they left off.
10. To get your points for a spawn the member must do one of the following.
a ) donate 6 fry to the club to be auctioned off at the monthly meetings.
b) donate a sexed pair of the same fish to be auctioned off at the monthly meeting.
c) write an article of approximately 350 words or more for the clubs website or any future newsletter.
d) present a short presentation outlining your efforts to the spawn the fish.
11. Participants must be current Windsor Aquarium Society members



Unique To Us:

As a new club we want to get as many members as possible involved therefore we will be doing the following:


1. We will be making a list with point values as we go. When you get a spawn and want to know the point value contact the B.A.P. chairperson and you will be provided with the point value. This way we can form our own list of fish, as we go, again unique to The Windsor Aquarium Society.
2. We will also allow different tank strains, colour variations and fin types. This way if you only have a few tanks or are just interested in a certain type of fish you will have a better chance to participate in the program. For Example if you are only interested in guppies your possibilities are endless in this program. The same goes with other livebearers, angelfish etc.
3. Point values for subsequent spawns of the same species will be awarded 5 points. For example if you spawn black angel fish you would receive 10 points and then you would get 5 points for each different colour variety or fin type,
4. Only one B.A.P. submission is allowed per spawn, so if you spawn marble angels and end up with 75% marble fry and 25% black fry you will need to pick one for submission.
5. Geographical variants of a species are expectable so long as they are generally acceptable in the hobby. Examples are Rainbow fish, Killies , African Cichlids ( including West Africans )etc.



Awards:

There will be certificates for each and very species spawned as well as plaques for each level of achievement.

Beginner. 30 points

Junior. 50 points

Senior. 100 points

I have a few questions regarding to of your points.

I'm personally not a fan of "ballon" fish, however they are still a species of fish in that they can spawn and/or breed but have been selectively bred in this manner. I'd recommend removing this condition because it is going to take the BAP down a slippery slope in the future that you may cause "headaches". By that I mean, are we now going to eliminate all of the various types of fancy coldwater fish such as goldfish; they're all defects in my opinion, though those who keep and raise them don't think so. Where do the "Glo light" fish created by Seagrest Farms fall within the BAP? I'm also not a fan of hybrids, but how do you handle that? Especially with the Aulonocara species aka Peacocks (Rift Lake Cichlids)? Do we reject ballon fish and accept albinos?

Just bringing this up so we can kill any potential "issues" that may arise in the future. I've been involved with and have founded clubs in the past, as have a few others in the club and It's far better to make things very clear in the beginning rather than later when someone brings in their hybrids, genetically modified fish, etc. I'd recommend that you handle the fish as species and eliminate features such as "balloon" and hybrids. The cold reality is that many fish that we see in the hobby are not how they appear in the wild, including one of my favourites, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (German Ram,, Gold Ram, etc.) They're all modified. So again, to keep this job much easier for less, I'd highly recommend that you eliminate hybrids and of course not accept a fish that is "defective" in terms of it wasn't spawned to look that way, i.e., crooked spine, missing eye, etc. when that was not the breeder's intention.

10. To get your points for a spawn the member must:

I'm quite certain you mean that only one (1) of these conditions apply and not all; as that is a common standard with most clubs. But if you could please confirm or deny, that would be appreciated.

Aside from those two points of clarification I think it's very good that we've finally got this up and running! It will encourage, challenge, create fun and bring a healthy level of competition among the members. Whether we like it or not, BAP programs always have that competitive edge to it and that should remain, however I feel that the main goal should be in aiding and encouraging hobbyists to strive to take their hobby to the next level in creating conditions in which their fishies will be content enough to spawn and raise their own fish families. It should also help introduce more uncommon species within the club as some of the members are keeping uncommon animals and may never introduce them to others without the vehicle of a BAP program.

Fixed #10 , thanks for pointing that out. Researching #3 and sorry for the delay in getting this done. This program has the potential as seen in other clubs to really take all of our fish keeping skills to a new and exciting level.

I could not agree more. Participating this can really show a person what they can do in this hobby. I personally love the BAP program and hope to go far in it.

I see a battle between African cichlids and the Livebearers. Steve's cichlids have more bite but Glen's Guppies have the numbers. May the lowly Platy and oft disregarded Guppy be restored to their proper places atop aquaria royalty!

In the interest of getting more people involved in the B.A.P. program we have lowered the amount of fry that need to be donated from 10 to 6 . Also here re the different ways you can earn points in this program .
