Well I thought about doing my 55 gallon but its tightly in the bottom of a tank stand and has another stand of tanks next to the one end the tank could come out. Way more work than its worth for me. lol. Maybe one day if i move things around I will do it. Let me know how the 55 gallon turn out. You will need more than 2 bottles of paint for that project but will still be cheap at a $1 a bottle. Have Fun.

FYI,
For those using the pictured backgrounds, you can spread a bit of cooking oil on the surface of the glass and on the background then slap the background into place on the glass. You have to make sure both surfaces are clean and free of dirt particles before spreading the oil. You don't need much oil, just dabble a bit on and spread it with a cloth. Then use a large putty knife or credit card to ride out the air bubbles. It sticks on perfectly as if it's been glued and makes the background pop out.

Interesting solution phish. I'm just wondering about the presence of a vegetable or olive oil on the tank glass attracting insects?

Interesting solution phish. I'm just wondering about the presence of a vegetable or olive oil on the tank glass attracting insects? I've done this on all my tanks and haven't seen any insects roaming around. If it's a concerned, the edges can be closed off with clear tape but I really don't think it's necessary. Once there is a thin film of oil between the glass and the background, you literally can't move it unless you peel away from a corner to break the seal. It works really well. It's about $2/ft of the 2-sided black/blue reversable backgrounds so it doesn't break the bank to cover up the back and looks like it's painted on when applied with oil.

Lots of different interesting insects in this part of the country as compared to the east coast. Wasn't sure if the presence of oil would draw them out. Glad it's working for ya.

Ultimately, painting is the way to go but in case you get tired of the background and want to change things up, this is the alternative. Soapy water also works as a film but water tends to evaporate after a week or so and oil well errrr... doesn't.

Here is the background I put on the 55 gallon. Applied using cooking oil, the pic was taken with a phone so it's not thqt good but you can see how it stands out and looks life like.

Last weekend I set up a 55gal tall for my wife's cichlids. I was going to paint the back of the tank blue but stumbled on some cheap blue vinyl table clothes at dollarama. Took it home cut it to size and secured it to the back of the tank. The vinyl also stuck itself to the glass for a better securing. I know I broke all the rule of photography for taking picture of aquariums.

I know I broke all the rule of photography for taking picture of aquariums. hahaha ... like I said in my presentation: "Add lighting to the top of the tank ... take lots of photos at different angles ... delete the bad ones and publish the good ones"
