I've often heard that fish like veggies. I have red wag platys and neon tetras; which type if vegetable do they like the best? Thanks guys.

I feed my cichlids lettuce, sometimes cucumber. But the best is boil peas. Just take the outer skin out, and it's good for their digestive system.

I feed peas, and zucchini to my fish at least twice a week! Any other veggie, and garlic as well! Some things make the water a bit murky, but so far it cleared up fast all the time! Well I feed it to my plecos and everything else eat too!

Yes peas also garlic. I use Kent Garlic Extreme once a week added to there food. Some flake food to is veggie based.

I bought a neat little $3 clip from PetWise the other day. It's a clear underwater vegetable clip, but with a piece of large-spaced plastic mesh. You can place your blanched veggies in the mesh, fold, clip, and suction-cup it underwater. Whatever is uneaten is easy to remove. And even the shrimp can get at it!

I use potato, sweet potato spinach and garlic, and zuchinni regularly... blanch them all first, freeze them, and my fish go CRAZY for it!!!

I just finished feeding my angels their weekly dose of peas which as usual turned into me vacuuming the majority of them off the bottom..... So I decided to try the remaining ones in my African cichlid tank and they went crazy over them! I was wondering how people go about feeding their fish garlic other then expensive fish foods with garlic in them. Which I will go buy if there's not a cheaper alternative. I had a few cases of bloat in my angel tank which I want to prevent from happening again. It has seems to be cleared up after lots of water changes and gravel vacuuming. Just want to try to prevent it. Thanx Eric

I do both. I slice veggies really thin, blanch them, and then freeze in sandwich bags.... Bristlenose hoard these... and guard them with their life However I also make my own veggie bites, where I mince everything in my food processor,including vitamins... and bake in my oven to crisp them up, then dehydrate in my dehydrator... shrimp LOVE these bites... Natural, and no preservatives, so I have to store them in the freezer, but much better than ANYTHING you can buy in stores..

Awesome advice! I'm guna give it a go as well. I've been looking to get garlic into my fishes diet and this seems like the perfect way.

Anybody who feeds zucchini should know that they don't have to blanch it. The main issue with this is that the food likes to float. There is a cheap and easy solution to this. Poke a fork in it. The weight of the fork holds the food down and the fork is food safe. Easy to clean for the next time too.

I separate an egg first... I poach the yolk so it's cooked, and leave the white aside.... I cut up and blanch all my veggies, and then run them through the processor. I then add things like garlic,whole shrimp, algae powder, wheat germ, meal worms, earth worms, vitamins, and anything else you'd like to add in. I blend the cooked yolk into the mix, and then add the egg white to the lot to stick it all together. You can use agar agar to this instead of the egg white, but haven't tried it yet. Despite it's benefits. I then pour the mixture into a fine mesh strainer, and let sit for a bit to lose most of the water. after I'm happy with the consistency, I spoon it all into a zip lock bag, and cut off one corner. I squeeze the bag into lines on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake in a preheated oven at 375 for 10-15 mins. you can let them cool chop them up and feed your fish this way, or you can dehydrate them further for crunchy bites. you'll need a dehydrator for that though. I have a food processor that I specifically use for this sort of thing, and NEVER tell anyone you use it to chop bugs :/ You always end up getting a weird look I also have a meat grinder that's only ever seen beef heart and shrimp. I've been making my own food for a LONG long time. Best place to find ingredients............ Asian grocery stores. hands down.

...dinner at your house sounds delicious.. I used to make a frozen, raw food for a couple of big fish I had. I don't remember the exact recipe, but it contained spirulina, spinach, fish heads, whole shrimp, whole small fish, liver, eggs, zucchini, and gelatin - poured it into a tray, let the gelatin set, then scored and froze it. The gelatin kept the food from melting into mush once it thawed in the tank.

I have used gelatin before, I leave it out now though, I use egg instead.... I have yet to pick up some agar agar, but it's supposed to be better (nutrition wise) than gelatin.
