I get brown algae on my fresh water tank decorations and walls which has caused me to lose fish especially my bottom feeders what causes this and is there a way to get rid of it other than emptying my whole tank. I have boiled the decorations scrubbed the walls and still the same thing. I bought my tank used and am now wondering if it was in there right from the start and even though I cleaned it well maybe some was left in the little hidden spots.

Do a water test (or bring a water sample to your local pet store) find out the PH and water hardness. Brown algae is an indication of bad water chemistry/wrong lighting/nitrate buildup, etc etc. What sort of substrate do you have/filtration/lighting? Natural plants will compete for nutrients with algae and should be used. I would start over with fresh water, cycle the tank for 6 weeks with live plants and a couple of hardy fish (danios are great for this), get good fluorescent lighting and go from there. Once a bit of algae forms (because some may bloom) go buy a couple of otocinclus or a Siamese Algae Eater (see my article about getting a real one, not a fake), and a few Malaysian Trumpet Snails and/or zerite snails. That should keep things under control as long as you do your 25% weekly water changes. hope this helps.

3littlefishes I couldn't agree more. And the Nerite snails work amazing, all my tanks are algae free. I am so glad I found them. lol

If you're getting some zebra nerites, I'd be interested in a few. What's the price?

Zebra Nerites are $5 each. The guy I am getting them from is getting two dozen. But not sure when they will be ready. I just need everyone to be patient. They work best if you have one for every 5 gallons. But I need to know from everyone who wants one, how many they each person wants. Thanks

thank you so much for advice will let you know how things go. I have no troubles with my other 3 tanks so this one has been driving me crazy. I am going to drain and get some new gravel and change out the type of filter I am using to same as the others maybe that will help me out.
