I picked up an odd sized tank a couple years ago and I'm throwing ideas around for how to optimize its footprint. 48 long X 20 deep X 14 tall. I've been thinking about partitioning it with 5mm lexan At cascading heights and ruining either a submersible pump or sump. I'd heat and form spouts for functionality and aesthetics to ensure a clean stable flow to each section. I'm even considering building small hangers or boxes to place at the spouts with "plastic scrubby" or open core materia which would leave more options for simple circulation(I have some small pond pumps and power heads and the like that could easily serve for just circulation). My thought now is making three 16x20x14 partitions and leaving it for grow outs and breeders.
I'm also wondering what stock to keep if I do this. I find I am frequently moving 3-5" fish around as they grow out to avoid aggression problems and encourage pairing with sa/ca cichlids. Since I won't be keeping anything large and destructive in this I could heavily plant the whole thing as well. My current thoughts are JD/parrot grow out, maybe a school or gbr's or something, and reserve the last for injury quarantine/breeder.
Ant thoughts or suggestions would be great my appreciated.
(Edit)
I've been doing a little more thinking about this and here's what I've come up with. Obviously I am shooting for the most cost effective solutions.
-Wooden mold to form partitions.
-I have a 200gph submersible head that should be plenty.
-Grate sized roughly 12x2" at 5-7" measured from bottom.
-3 sponge filters.
-Possibly stainless hangers for filter media, but I am thinking it won't be necessary.
Quick search online puts me at about $50-60 in acrylic, otherwise I have everything.
If I get some positive feedback maybe I'll tackle it this weekend. Clear or black acrylic? Substrate/plants? Any other thoughts?
