A while back I rehoused a 6" female JD because she wasn't getting along too well with the 9" male I had her with. Moved her in with my 6" male blood parrot in the pleco tank. For about a month now the parrot and JD have been exhibiting breeding behavior, even though I assumed the parrot to be sterile. Well she's been laying eggs and I found fertilized eggs yesterday, shortly after I spotted them she ate them though. Today she layed a dozen or so more and ate them again as soon as the parrot came near. I'm inclined to let the keep going for a bit but I'd like some of those babies too. Any ideas to stop this?

Could try getting a divider to keep the female from getting threatened by the parrot. I'm assuming that's why she keeps eating the eggs.

If your raise their fry that's gonna be one hybrid of a fish. Parrots are basically Severums and Red Devils so adding a Jack into the mix may make for one odd looking fish. Just be sure to inform anyone you're selling to what they are... if you take that route.

I agree with @jhg - its never fun to receive a fish that you don't know its ancestry only to find out that its a different species that you anticipated (especially if that person is wanting to breed). That said, some hybrids do become main stream such as the blood red parrots which are considered a striking fish by many people, however you must also keep in mind that they might have physical problems as many parrots have mouth and swim bladder issues. My mother has had blood red parrots for years (some with defects while others are perfectly healthy) and has even had some pairs produce eggs but the male was never fertile. I tried Googling a hybrid of the two but it yielded unreliable results - if you do take the road of keeping them it would definitely be interesting to see how the turned out. All the best, cheers.
