Good evening everyone,
So I have never had shrimp before but recently I found a mini 2.5 gallon aquarium in my parents basement (no idea where it came from) so I stole it and threw in some rock and plants from an old aquarium rather than feeding them to my cichlids. I then started wondering what kind of creatures could survive in such a small area and the only ones I could think of was snails and shrimp. However, based on most forums it seems the most common tank to keep them in is 10 gallon, with other people having success with 5 gallons. I do not intend to breed the shrimp so it would only be a few in the aquarium, but would a 2.5 gallon be alright for them? Also it is so tiny that I can't really put in a heater (maybe if I find a smaller one that hangs on the side) so are there any species that could survive without one? Let me know, if not I will just leave it as is. Cheers!

With proper care and attention a 2.5 gallon tank can house a few fish or in my case some nano fish, fry and plants with no issues. I do water changes twice a week on my 2.5 gallon tanks. As for shrimp a 2.5 gallon would be fine for the tougher varieties of shrimp. Cherry shrimp would just fine. I have a colony in a 5.5 gallon right now. But they would be fine in a 2.5 gallon especially if there only a few. Attachments:

Haha that's pretty sweet, what kind of heater do you have going on those tiny aquariums? What kind of nano fish do you keep in them (I probably will just get a few shrimp but the prospect of these tiny tanks intrigue me). Cheers!

Why not try a few cherry shrimp , maybe a trio of heterandria formosa and maybe a trio of dwarf cories. You would have to really keep up on small water changes and watch that you don't over feed . Glen has really shown that you can do lots with 2 1/2 gallons tanks but you need to be careful . Petsmart sells small nano tank heaters . Enjoy your new tank.

You can buy little 7.5 watt heaters at petsmart like Les said. There flat instead of round so they dont take up much space. I have pygmy habrosus cory, gold heterandria formosa and endler fry right now in them. And some fish in holding to go to a bigger tank. Also floating plants like hornwort and java moss help keep water quality up between water changes and for me at least provide hiding place and food sources for fry. And shrimp also love those very same plants. Let me know what you decide to keep.

@jhg the tank is set up with light, gravel, snails and plants but I don't have any filtration or heating in it yet so the shrimp will have to wait. Might save up my money and get some of those expensive panda shrimp (go big or go home, am I right?)

Ahhhhh nah I wouldn't go big with the shrimp. I'd start with some of the more common, hardier shrimp before I would ever delve into anything high-end. My nano shrimp tank is currently occupied by a pair of Platys so I've started another one in a large Marina breeder box. They seem to love it in there. When I was heavy into SW tanks we would put our hand in the tank and let the cleaner shrimp go to work. Tonight I allowed my daughter to do the same thing with our Red Cherry Shrimp colony and a few of them went right to work eating whatever bacteria and micro-organisms they could find on her little fingers - very cool and cute!
Why don't you add a few Ghost shrimp in your setup for now? They're a $1 each at Petsmart and they're also very interesting to watch. That way you accomplish two things: the tank is up and shrimp-ified and you get your feet wet with keeping shrimp. Just a thought. I hadn't kept FW shrimp in a very very long time so I took the path of least resistance and did that.
