So I'm adding a 35 gal Refugium and I've seen some designs and am wondering which is best or if there are any helpful tips. I have a protein skimmer going in there and I want a sand bed and macro algae. That's all I know about what I want.
Is there anything I should consider before installing so that I won't kick myself later

I just done this a few weeks ago! I just got an already divided refugium, however it was a tight fit for the return pump and the skimmer! The best thing I have done is to cover most of the top of the refugium! Also I made a sock holder which makes life a lot easier!

Thanks. I should have enough acrylic to make a lid after. After much research I've decided to place the return in the Center chamber with 3 baffles on each side. The overflow drops to a "T" with a ball valve to the refuge and the rest to the skimmer. That way my fuge isn't getting water that's been skimmed. But who knows I've never had a sump, skimmer or refugium in the past. I've just run on a canister for years. I expect noticeable results after this.
So I should make a sock holder and buy some socks then?

-UPDATE- So i made this exact setup, and it did work wonders. I have a Deep sand bed refuge in the first section, 3 baffle and return, then protein skimmer on the opposite side. The fundamental flaw is that the pump for my skimmer and the return are in the same chamber which is redundant. I keep my cheeto and some live rock in the deep sand bed area, and also some crabs and a star are in there right now. My refuge just cracked however, I think I made a baffle to big so the constant pressure finally cracked the glass, So i'll repair and rebuild.
Starting my 30 gal reef tank soon, since I converted my 90 gal to FOWLR recently.
