I am a bengineer with plants. I have a 125 I want to set up with medium range lighting but I'm a little stumped on where to start. My take is 6ft and is currently running two, three foot 17w floressents. I'm on a budget at the moment so I'm thinking of just upgrading the bulbs for now. Can someone suggest an appropriate low cost bulb that can get my take in better shape for plants?
Id like to upgrade to LED after the holidays but I know nothing about them. Are they suitable for plant growth?

If you want to go LED route for a planted tank, there are a few good ones out there. Finnex makes great fixtures and so does buildmyled.com, I personally have a Finnex and they are great for medium light. Remember with LEDs, it is going to cost more at first, but you will not have buy replacement bulbs.
For a low cost bulb for your current fixture, home depot or Canadian Tire have 6500k range shop light bulbs

the best lighting and brightest i find are lights you buy from a hardware store for your house, but use for aquarium. i have a 40 gallon tall and use a 24inch T8 LED tube bulb?? 8$ from a hardware store and makes a big difference compared to lighting u buy in a pet store!@+!
try it and i promise you wont be dissapointed
