I know this is an older thread but I'm going to reply to this because my husband and I don't buy new tanks. Trust me the tanks that we've bought, many were in bad shape. Some of them were just really bad. We tried everything we could think of to get these stains off the glass but nothing worked. We didn't give up though. We found that with warm water and 1500 grit wet sand paper, everything comes off easy. When you think the white stuff is etch into the glass, it isn't. The sand paper doesn't scratch the glass either. Just rub the sand paper in circular motions on the glass and remember to use water. It doesn't require a lot of work either. It comes right off and the glass is super clear and clean. Works everytime. If the tank, glass lids and so on have been dry for a very long time it's best to soak it first for about a week. Trust me this works everytime! We've made videos on how to refurbish a whole tank set up but we just haven't posted it on YouTube yet. When you post the video please make sure you post a link here or even post the video straight to the forum . Would be a video that would generate a lot of views.
