I hate to say it, but for a colourful kids tank, I would recommend platies or guppies.

You could try some of the GMO'ed fishes out there (Pictured below), I'm not a fan of GMO'ing animals but they are vibrant when it comes to freshwater fish. Outside of that, as Ken said, Guppies would do the trick. You'll never need to buy more if you allow them to breed and not only that, I'm certain there are several people on this forum who could supply you with some Glowlight Danios

You can get them in the U.S. as well, I was shocked to see that Wal-Mart had some in their pet department (probably able to sell them quickly so make sense why they would keep them). You can also get a blacklight and their colour will really pop under it. You also might be able to get some swordtails or other community fish at the next meeting for a good price, there is normally a bag or two at each meeting. Some nice red ones might be good for the kids and they get to see them grow out (since they are normally small).

I know Aqua has some glowlights pretty much all the time, not sure which they have in stock currently though.

Well lets get one thing strait, no fish can poison any water way!!!
GloFish are illegal in Canada, because they are no current regulation on them by the Canadian government. They are created by altering the gene for colour, with coral fluorescent DNA , therefore no poison involved. They are not created by radioactive isotopes, as some of the local store owners would tell you! There is however a "natural" mutation strain that is available locally! The difference is that those always have yellow head! They were created with the gold danio, the results are the pink and yellow danios.
Did quite a bit of research into this, as my son was begging me for some time to get him " the pretty danios"!!!
