Has anyone attempted to modify a canister to convert it to another more practical tool for a reef tank? a reactor or something along that. I have a EHEIM 2217 or something that i'm pulling from my setup. I think it's doing more harm than good. It have some ceramic rings, sac of phosphate remover and a bag of carbon in it. But i'm more worried its a nitrate factory.
Any suggestions?

The only canister I modified is for my planted tank. I put an inline heater and inline Co2 reactor- both work great and I love that it keeps stuff out of the tank. Be aware your flow might drop a little depending on the equipment used.
As long as you get equipment that fits correctly or you plumb in yourself it will work great and more effective than a stand alone unit.
