I've started a cichlid tank with a crushed coral substrate. That makes the PH in the tank 8.2. My question for you is, what type of plants like the higher PH. The cichlids that I'm keeping are all smaller so I'm not worried about them always uprooting them or eating them. I have planted tanks now but with all the drift wood I have they have a much lower PH around 6.2. Any help would be greatly appreciated

If I remember correctly, all Vals grow well in hard water, hornwort as well, and I believe it is dwarf sage or chain swords ( not sure of those two thought!)

Best ones I can think of for your situation would be anacharis, hornwort, anubias, and ludwigia species. But with a crushed coral substrate I would stick to the first 3 I mentioned as rooted plants won't fair well in crushed coral.

If the crushed coral substrate is a problem but the higher PH is not maybe try planting the plants in pots with a different substrate.

Not sure what kind of cichlids you are getting into, but if you have any mbuna they will shred those plants quickly haha. I have some pothos in my filter to help get rid of the nitrites and one day I heard this splashing. I come over to the tank to find my kenyi and acei males taking turn and biting at a pothos leaf which was dipping in the water. They ate half the leaf and probably would have pulled the whole plant in had I not moved it haha. If you have peacocks or SA cichlids you should be ok but mbuna are ruthless for some veggies haha

I'm keeping shell dwellers. I think my plan right now is to divide the substrate, so I'll have a couple areas with substrate for plants and the majority will be the crushed coral. This way the plants can grow into the coral or not.
