Hello to all hobbyists.
My husband and I are new to the hobby. Our one year anniversary is coming up in July. I originally bought a small 20 gallon for him for his birthday but I quickly learned smaller isn't better with this hobby. We ended up purchasing a 55 g and made the decision to go saltwater. We went into this blind. We didn't take the time to learn about all the equipment we would need. We knew nothing about the cost and time needed.
Don't get me wrong though. I have absolutely no regrets. I love our tank and all our livestock. At this time we are running a fowlr tank. Eventually I would love to get into corals as well. We need more equipment for that though. We are running 3 filters right now. The Whisper Power 60, Tetra whisper ex70 and Fluval 406. When we bought the fluval I was hoping to switch to only that filter. I was told to keep running all 3 as the more filtration the better.
Our current livestock are as follows: 2 False percs, Blue Hippotang, Yellow Tang, 4 Chromis, Flame Angel, 2 Cleaner Shrimp, 2 Camel Shrimp, numerous hermit crabs and snails and a Sandsifting Goby. We went through a few problems in the beginning with high levels of nitrates and ammonia but weekly small water changes corrected that. We ask a lot of questions when we go to the LFS and we always research our purchases first. Some say we have too much in our tank but all our levels are good and all our livestock are thriving and getting bigger. They all get along and some even buddy up.
It's nice to know there is a forum to ask questions and research that is local. I know I will make good use of this forum just for equipment research alone.

Tank looks great. If you want to get into coral, I suggest getting a protein skimmer. I run that and a GFO reactor (which I never change out on schedule) and that's about it.
Caution though - looks like you may have camel shrimp (may have been sold to you as peppermint) - look into that first. I know that they eat some coral (if that is what you have)

Nice looking tank!
I think seggsy is right, that looks like a camel shrimp to me as well!

There are actually two camel shrimp in there. First LFS we dealt with said they would be good for our tank. Since we aren't quite ready for corals yet I just let them be. Pretty fun to watch at times. I know we will need more equipment when we are ready for corals. Right now the only equipment we have are the 3 filters, heater and lights attached to cover. We have a bubbler as well that has a bar on each side in the back. Don't know if we actually need them though. I am still trying to figure if we have enough flow or too much. It is sometimes overwhelming how much there is to learn.

There is never too much flow! Just need to thinker with the jets a bit. I had a fluval 404, and 2 x 200 gph hydor on a 10 gallon nano tank! Now there was a bit of excessive flow for the more delicate corals, but I still had a huge open brain in there that was doing extremely well!
