Again I'm proud to announce that for the third year in a row The Windsor Aquarium Society is sponsoring the grade 7/8 classroom tank. The previous two years we have done a community type tank with many different types of fish and shrimp . This year I thought I would go in a different direction so today I dropped off a pair of calico convict cichlids. I did this with the hope that they will spawn ( you know they will )and the students will get the opportunity to see these wonderful parents in action raising their fry . I also included a couple of large apple snails to help eat any uneaten food.

Thank you so much! The students were very excited about the fish. It was great to see them reading the written instructions and following the advice about setting things up. Our class ipads are currently being wiped clean and redone. As soon as we get ours back, I will make sure this term's "Aqua-Techs" research this species of fish. Having the tank adds a lot to the atmosphere in the room because it is the rotary science room. We have a class vermicompost bin as usual and so we will be able to feed the fish some baby worms once in a while. We're also going to grow some weird stuff in our window boxes this year - herbs, seeds from fruits, potato eyes - whatever the kids want to try. I'm thinking when we change the water in the tank we should water the window boxes with that water. The fish tank is a big part of the "life" in the room. I can't thank you enough.

Using the old tank water is a great idea and will help the window plants with all the natural nutrients found in it. I use water from my tanks for house plants and also flowers outside. Some people call the convict cichlids I dropped off "Pathway Fish " because they are usually one of the first egg laying fish they spawn and it hooks them into a lifetime of fish breeding .

The fish are just hiding out in the hollow log today. It might be a while before they venture out with this year's "enthusiastic" group of grade 7s. Yikes! I need a hollow log to hide in as well.

Give them time as I'm sure their stressed out . Don't be surprised if they use that hollow log to spawn in when their ready. I'm sure they will venture out more after this weekend when they feel more at home.

No, "Luke" and "Zoey", as they have been named, are still hiding out inside the hollow log. We haven't actually seen them eat so I am not sure on that one. They are even in the log when it is quiet in the room and I am the only one there. It will be super quiet there all weekend. Hopefully that will give them the time to venture out. I will check first thing Monday before the students get it to see how they are doing. I'll take some pictures too.

The kids loved the big batch of fish that arrived on Friday. They were getting pretty bummed about the other 2 hiding out in the hollow log all the time. I'll check to see what' up on Monday morning. We had some teen visitors from Walkerville running a program in our room, and all the grade 7's from the other class too and they were just as excited as my own students to see the fish being released by our 2 aqua-techs. Thanks for the boost of enthusiasm!
