Nope. The 2 "convicts" are still hiding in their "jail cell" hollow fake log. Should we remove the log? That seems mean. Could they have had babies in there and are guarding them? We've not once seen them swim the tank. And that's even me, alone, arriving early in the morning well before the noise of the day kicks in. We've seen one of them pop its head out and eat once the food sinks down to that level and that's about it. The kids do love all the fish though. I'm worried for those 2 scardy-cats though.

Good news. The tank is looking good as are all the new fish. And....the convicts have been making their way out, even checking out the clay pot. Students check the tank all the time and often request to sit there during reading time or when writing a test. It's very calming for them.

Excellent update, I guess the fish just needed to get used to all the movement in the room with them.

Glad the convicts are finally feeling comfortable enough to venture out . Are you able to keep up with the water changes ? If so I see eggs in the future for this pair. The students will be so pumped if that happens.

Excellent update, I guess the fish just needed to get used to all the movement in the room with them. Ha ha. I'm not even used to all the movement in the room THIS year. How often should we change the water? And if I remember we go down about half way then back up again with water that has sat in the big jugs for a day or so, right?

You could use that big jug you have ( I think it's about 5 gallons ) . Just like you said , just let it sit for a day and remove the same amount from the tank . Add the new water and refill the jug for the next water change . Try to do this once a week if possible .

We returned from 2 weeks away and all was well. We had set up the auto feeder. I gave the fish a bunch of food on Monday AM just in case. We should probably do a water change tomorrow as Friday is our "Fix N' Finish Friday" where the kids get a period to catch up on work and do their classroom jobs.
Hope everyone around here is having a good 2016 so far.

Glad the tank and fish survived the holiday's . That auto feeder sure comes in handy during those times . Were you able to get the water change done ? Also do you need some more filter pads ? Just open the lid of the filter to see if it's dirty > If so let me know and I can drop some off. Anything else you need just let us know....

We did the water change. I have a spare filter pad that a student got when buying charcoal for a science project about DIY water filters. I'll check it this week. All seems fine except those convicts still spend a lot of time hiding. Students are enjoying the fish and we just changed class jobs so there are 2 new AquaTechs who are eager to care for the fish tank. They've given the fish a couple of tiny red wigglers from our class compost bin. They like the life-death blood-and-guts live-action struggle! We used to watch Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom for that same reason when we were kids.

Awesome watching fish go after live worms , kids must get a kick out of that . Do you want me to come and take those "scared-e-cat" convicts out of there and bring in more community fish like last year ? Would only take a minute and I'd be glad to do it .

Well, sure if you feel like doing that, the kids would probably like it better, and maybe the convicts would be happier too. Also, if you do have a spare filter, that would be great. I have one from a student, but it is not quite the right size, although we have it in there anyway. No rush though as things are fine.

What day would work best to pick them up ? Right after school ? And I will bring a couple of filter pads for you.
