Hi! I am starting up a couple of freshwater planted aquariums and am interested in getting snails and maybe some shrimp
Can anyone tell me what is the best type of snail for my aquariums that won't multiply or eat my plants?
Also good types of shrimp?
Thank you Patty

I would recommend that you do a lot of research on the snails first. Most multiply very fast, and those that don't still lay eggs all over the aquarium. The eggs just do not hatch! I personally keep Malaysian trumpet snails in all my planted tanks. They will multiply fast, and there will be hundreds in no time, however they turn the soil in their search for food! With that they aerate the soil, and clean up detritus in the same act. They also live plants alone. Also I personally like the red footed rams-horn snails. They will damage your plants if they are not fed enough. However they will eat the dead leaves first, and maybe then they will start on the healthy plants. They also multiply fast. To control population you could get some sort of loach after a while, and it will eat your snails.
As for the shrimps, it depends what are you looking to accomplish with them! Also what fish are you keeping with them. Small neocaridina sp. ( different colour varieties of the cherry shrimp) are ecstatically pleasing, get a bit of detritus cleaning from them. However they are small and the baby shrimp could get eaten by your fish. Amano shrimp are not colourful, the baby's do not survive in freshwater! But they are large and eat some algae from the plants along with detritus.
I keep both types of shrimp in all my tanks! If you like more information on shrimp visit shrimpfever.com!
