This was done on my Aqueon Evolve 4. I had bought the tank and set it up only to find out that the filter was way too strong for a Betta. I scoured the internet to see if people had similiar issues and sure enough everyone said it wasn't useful to house a Betta. I read about some people putting holes in the output line and/or stuffing sponge into the outlet diffuser. I didn't feel like that's a good solution since stuffing sponge would put stress on the water pump and putting holes would release filtered water back into the filter chamber reducing the circulation. So what I ended up doing is getting a topfin 10-20 gallon undergravel filter. It came with 14 lego pieces that come together to build a floor for larger tanks. Each piece was about 3"x6" so I only needed 3 pieces. The floor area on the Evolve 4 is 9.25" x 6.5". I went to home depot and sized up a 90 degree fitting and attached to the output nozzle with a little piece of rubber hose and it fit together nicely. Basically, the outcome is a reverse undergravel filter and now the little tank is perfectly peaceful for a Betta and the filter runs very efficiently with the addition of water being circulated from underneath the gravel. And Voila... one happy Betta making bubble nests

This was a rescued Betta from Petsmart. Poor thing was so weak when I bought it that when it swam near the intake grill, it would get sucked in and stick to it. It didn't have the strength to pull away so I had to put a sponge over the intake for a week until it got its strength back.

When I first put it in without the modification to the filter, it thought it found the Betta Whirlpool, lol. I don't think it was suitable for any fish.
