Just curious how many here have quarantine tanks set up for new arrivals? Do you just keep an empty tank cycled and running all the time, in case a fish starts looking poorly or you want to get more ? How long do you keep new fish in quarantine for ? Do you keep anything in it at all when it is empty of fish (ex: snails, shrimp?) Or are you the type to just throw new fish into your already inhabited tank and hope for the best?

I bought a quarantine tank but now use it for fry, lol. I don't quarantine (I know I should). I've had new fish die (usually within a month) but I've never had existing fish die because of new fish. I just acclimate very slowing and hope for the best.

I'm curious about the answers to this, too. I have one new guy quarantined in a bucket until he perks up a bit from ammonia poisoning, but I'd love to get him in with the others so that he's not so alone. And also so he gets into cycled water. My sponge filter had not seeded enough yet, it seems.

Yup I have a quarantine tank Don't have it running but I have seeded pot scrubbies in my filter so when I need to set one up I just grab the scrubbies and squeeze it into the tank a couple time and instant cycle. I'll quarantine for up to 3 weeks and really keep an eye on how the new fish look. Don't keep anything in it.. Once done quarantined process is done I'll clean everything and put away until needed again. Learned my lesson a few years back when nearly everything in the tank died because of ich from new arrived fish that I didn't quarantine.

Sadly I do not and never have had a quarantine tank , it's one of the things that I need to change with my fishkeeping . I've been burnt a few times and still haven't set one up . Every time I start to set one up before I know it I'm aquascaping it and boom I have another tank to add to my fishroom . You would think after 50 years o fishkeeping I would know better.
Still time to learn...

I have a quarantine tank but only set it up when needed. It does not run all the time. I just place a seeded sponge filter in it and some cycled tank water from another tank and good to go. But I do not use it as much as I should. I use it for pet store fish most of the time since I had burned a few to many times. I keep them this way for around 3 weeks. But I have nearly never quarantined fish I get from other hobbyist. I know all fish should get quarantined since you never know and should not take the risk but many of us do and I am just as guilty.

Lol, I bet the trick to leaving your quarantine tank alone is to just make it ugly. Like, paint the back of it a godawful colour that no amount of aquascaping could ever make pretty.
I do have an additional question, though. Does quarantine tank size matter? Like, say you get a fish that wouldn't normally be happy in a 10 gallon tank. Within reason of course, would you still put it in a 10 gallon?
I was considering grabbing a small 3-5 gallon for the purpose, since the fish I plan to keep are generally very small. As juveniles, at least. Kuhlis, barbs, and cory cats, specifically.

I have 2 quarantine/grow out tanks a 10g and 30g that I always have running. When not in use I keep a few guppies in the quaratine tanks. I keep all new fish in the quarantine for 4 to 6 weeks. I have got a few fish from club members that I know, they at times have gone straight in the main tank. Like Les in the past I have set up quaratine tanks and shortly after that they become permanant tanks. After a few times over the years not having a quarantine tank and adding new fish to the main tank to find out later that they are sick, now I don't take any chances Quarantine Quarantine Quarantine

Yes I think a 5g with a sponge bubble filter would be fine to quarantine 2 or 3 of those smaller species at a time. Just leave it bare bottom nothing fancy so it's easy to clean.

Yes i always quarantine. 2 weeks at least. Not running all the time just when needed. Use seeded material or rocks from established tank in home made bubble filter. Have a 5g o 20 g depending on size of fish needing quarantine.

I had to set up a quarantine last night. 5 gallon home depot bucket with a heater and sponge filter. I grabbed a seeded sponge out of one of my tank HOB filters and placed it on top of the sponge filter. I've got an Angelfish with a swollen belly that I'm attempting to treat with epsom salts. The fish has a great appetite, the belly is just swollen on both sides like it swallowed a ping pong ball.

Well I want to quarantine new fish, I have a few spare tanks that I would be able to use as such! However if I get a new fish I want to see it in the display tank as soon as I can! Soooooo I do not quarantine! On my defence.....well I am very lazy!
