I would like to draw your attention to this great article by Diana Walstad about how plants play a major role in the uptake of ammonia and how the nitrogen cycle is very different in aquatic plants than in terrestrial ones. All the more reason to keep the lights off when cycling a tank and of course plants plants plants!
