plants in sand substrate

what is the general practice for growing plants in sand substrate? suppliments needed?

Very few plants will grow in a sand only substrate.
You could try Vallisneria, it will put runners under the sand to grow new plants.

Another possible plant is Anubias ... it sits on the sand, the roots will poke into the sand but the rhizome where the leaves and roots come out of has to be above the sand.
