The simplicity of a sponge filter, so simple but so incredibly effective, so effective that with all the modern advancements with "Hang on the back filters" (HOB) and or high tech canister filters, there still has yet to be a level of nitrification that is achieved like the infamous "SPONGE FILTER!".
Although after calling myself "Master of the Sponge filter" and doing a very in-depth write up about sponge filter ratings and practical uses, I had no idea how it would spread to other forums around the world wide net, but here we are again, I am going to give a brief review of what I think is about the best deal online (regarding a sponge filter in its class), not only for cost effectiveness but quality and practical uses as well as ratings.
Let's talk about the Chinese sponge filter XY-380 a product of Xinyou, rated for 50-80gals.
www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B00KZJYR00/ref=pd_aw_sbs_199_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=41cSFdZrACL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL115_SR115%2C115_&psc=1&refRID=31C9Q2V5J5C1SDHAMBCG
At less then $8 shipping included and Amazon prime at that (so you receive the product in 2-3 days usually), it's a Smoken deal.
Very high quality sponge filter, construction is very strong, and the sponge is fine enough to give crystal clear water but course enough to still have very high water flow.
The interesting part about this sponge filter is how the air bubbles seem to be a lot finer then any other sponge filter I have used (and being "master of the sponge filter", I will admit I have used quite a few different brands and models). Because of these finer air bubbles this creates significantly more upper pressure and thus more water flow being driven out the top of the air flow tube. Also another trick I found is the air tubes for the ATI hydro sponge filters seem to be a bit larger in diameter, however this larger tube fits on the XY380 outer lip just perfectly, creating even more flow if needed.
Example:
The flow is easily twice the tube that is supplied, but even at the smaller tube is still considerable more flow then any other sponge filter I have tried.
For the money and the results it provides you can't beat the sponge filter.
The final point I would like to make is how easy it is to maintain, just a bucket of water (best to use old tank water or water dechlorinated), simply squeeze out the sponge and replace it back in the tank. The most remarkable point to emphasize is that food or feces never get sucked or trapped in the sponge like a HOB or especially canister filters. Left uncleaned this will eventually cause a nitrite explosion thus exposing our prescious aquatic pets to a very lethal level of toxins.
A simple squeeze in the bucket a few times a month and the sponge filter will never let you down.
Cheers mates!
