I am trying to figure out which HOB protein skimmer to get for my 125 g saltwater tank. I do not have a sump so this limits me. I prefer not to spend more than $300 on a new unit. I have been looking at Reef Octopus and Coralife so far. Any recommendations?

Skimmer is very important, and that is a big tank that you are planning. I suggest always getting a skimmer rated for double the water volume you will have.
Personally, I am not a big fan of seaclones or coralife - though I have a friend running a coralife with decent success.
That said, I have been running an old model turboflotor that I bought used....like 6 or 7 years ago. They probably don't make it anymore. I usually buy equipment used...if you don't mind going to the states, you can look on Michiganreefers too.

My grandpa ran a salt tank for 30 years with just a filter hanging on the back. Nothing else. He had beautiful corals and fish in their Breeding and healthy. If you get an ecosystem going you don't need any of this help. Mind you I only use 3 things. A filter. A skimmer and a circulation pump. My grandfather had to take his tank down when he moved and never set it back up
