First off I will begin this by saying, I am a total moron. I bought a group of Penguin Tetras at a local fish store yesterday. They had been in that store for at least a month and have always looked healthy. The store has immaculate tanks. So I figured, if I was going to skip quarantine, now would be a good time. The lights were off in my tank (due to the green water, which is almost gone btw) and I released the fish into my tank. This morning I turned the lights on again and much to my dismay, the new fish were COVERED in ICH!!! My tank has a lot of fish in it and some rather precious ones so I was devastated. One of my cardinals has a spot on its tail too. I am going to the store now to get some meds which simultaneously whacked my forehead against the steering wheel for being such a dumbass!

i will never make that mistake again... I did that once before with some fish that looked pretty healthy and lost all 4 of my clown loaches i had at that time. Was devastated..
btw what do you use to treat ich?

Ich can be present sometimes and not affect the fish until stress or weakened. There was probably a little bit on one and got stress in the move and boom ick spreads. But ick is actually a easier problem to take care of than some. Don't forget to turn up your temperature along with using you meds. I hate ick and have not had a issue with it in a long time. knock on wood.

i keep my tank at 80-82 degrees at all times, fish don't seem to mind and found that they've been much healthier then when i used to keep them at a lower temperature.

that sucks good luck with the treatments and agirard2003 if you keep cichlids they prefer 80-82 but no higher also they should be at this temp if youre trying to breed as well

+1 to guppies comments and advice. I bump up the temp and don't add any meds unless there is a sharp decline in health, or if there is no improvement after 2 weeks. Remember that a fish must be ich free for at least a week before you know the cycle is broken.

My temp is aways set at 82 because I keep amazon species that prefer it. I just bought some meds. It seems to be affecting the new fish only (and possibly the one cardinal although I can't say for sure.). thanks for the advice

Could always separate the sick ones and treat them separately.

I also used ich attack, the nice thing is its organic so it didnt harm my plant. The only draw back is its not the quickest thing out there and I think that ended up costing me a couple of young rams. Took about 2 weeks to clear up with 6 days of extra medicating to make sure all the free swimming parisites were dead. Also boy does that stuff make a stinky tank.
