With recent talk about lights and switching to LED here's a video that shows how to convert a shop light T12/T8 to LED

Interesting that you do not need a ballast for these bulbs! I think I also will try these out! I wanted to change bulbs in my basement anyway! This might be the way to go!

Some of these require ballasts and some don't... the problem is, can't rig old aquarium hood fixtures since most likely have 42" long tubes. Would most likely find these bulbs at 48" lengths.

In my case that is not a problem since I use shop lights on my aquariums!

Great idea but I'm lazy so I did even more research before I converted my shop light I used on my old 55 gallon I used these blbs in the pic from home Depot at that price I'm not voiding any warranties or having to do much more then switch out the bulb. And I have to say WOW it was an amazing difference

I changed out all the fluorescent fixtures in my fish room also, to 36" and 48" leds, not because I wanted to go with leds, and in spite of having a stock pile of over 40 daylight fluorescent T12 lamps, but because my T12 ballasts were dying and hard to replace. I removed the few working ballasts I had left, and installed $10 ea. leds from Amazon through out. The only downside is increased algae growth, I've decreased the lighting cycle on the timer by an hour, hope that works.
