Just found out the importance of check valves! Came home from vacation and found 135 gallons of tank water had siphoned out onto my hardwood floor and carpet. What a mess. Lost all but a few of my fish and the plants aren't doing so well either.

When you clean up, recover and decompress please post exactly what happened and what went wrong/failed. You might save someone else the heartache.

All my troubles started when a hose on my dish washer let go and flooded my kitchen and seeped through the floor and down the walls in my lower level. I had a pro come and move my tank because the ceiling and wall behind it was soaked and falling into the tank. When the tank was moved into the middle of the family room all the air pumps were put on the floor (not above tank like I normally do). I left on vacation for a week a had my son come over to check on things daily. Friday he checked and all was OK. I came home sunday to a smelly mess and a tank with only about 2" of water in it. I refilled the tank as fast as I could and tried to save some of the fish. One week later I have 4 angles left and 1 Discus 3 cardinals 2 corys 3 bristol nose and some otos. Total loss of 52 fish. Rebuild and restock after reconstruction!

Ouch! I've had disasters like that, but I was sort of lucky in where it happened. In our old house, the tanks were on the ground floor, on concrete. When my 225g decided to let go (not the whole thing, just bowed out the top 12" so it leaked approx 90g from between the glass. It went on the concrete and went out under the wall to outside. So no loss of fish, but had to jam all the fish from there into a 90 gallon (along with the residents of the 90g) together for over a month until I tore the tank down and rebuilt it.
Sure hope you can get this going again.
