Let's talk about taking videos you've recorded, and sharing them to the forum!
The Proboards and the Tapatalk app are a great way to connect with our fellow fish lovers, but what if you want to show everyone a video you've taken of your very own tanks?
Sharing images is easy enough. You can upload an image directly to the forum with little fuss. Unfortunately, we cannot upload videos in the same way.
In order to add our videos to our posts, the first thing we have to do is upload them onto a video sharing website. The most common and widely used website for video hosting is YouTube, but other options include Vimeo, Instagram, flickr, and even Facebook!
You will have to create an account on one of these sites if you do not have one already. Once you do, there are more than one way to upload your videos.
Let's discuss:
Uploading Videos Taken on a Mobile Device
Many videos are taken right on our cell phones and our tablets, these days. This can make uploading such videos a quick and easy process! (You should already have the app you plan to upload with installed on your device; if not, you will have to download it from the app store.)
Uploading with your mobile device can be accomplished in one of two ways:
a) By locating the video you took in your device's gallery; tapping on the share option (usually an icon similar to one of these); then choosing the app you'd like to upload it with; or,
b) By opening the app you'd like to upload it with; choosing the 'upload' or 'share' option; tapping 'browse' or similar option; then locating the file within your gallery.
Follow the instructions provided to you, and then allow the video to upload completely before you can share it.
Uploading Videos Taken Using a Digital Recording Device
Another way we take videos is by using the recording mode on a digital camera or camcorder.
In order to upload these videos, you will have to connect your camera (or its memory card) to your desktop or laptop PC. You may want to put a copy of the video file into a folder where it will be easy to find.
Then, using your web browser, go to the website you'd like to upload the video to; log in to your account; choose the 'upload' or 'share' option; click 'browse' or similar option; then locate the file within your gallery.
Again, follow the instructions provided to you, and then allow the video to upload completely before you can share it.
And Finally, How to Attach Your Video into a Forum Post
Once you have your video completely uploaded, you're ready to share it! But how you do so, will depend on a few things.
First, it will depend on how you're posting; using the desktop version of the website, the mobile version of the website, or the Tapatalk app on a mobile device.
If you're using the website on a desktop or a laptop computer, it's as simple as clicking the icon while you are composing your post, then copy-pasting the video's URL into the prompt that pops up.
This option is not available in the mobile version of the site, nor is it available in the Tapatalk app. In these cases, you will have to use video tags to embed your video, instead. To do this, you will have to type 'video' in square brackets, paste the video's URL, and then finish by typing '/video' in square brackets. Be careful not to add any spaces or excess punctuation, or the code will break.
For example, the code:
This leads to the second thing to know - how to find the URL of the video you want to post. In the case of YouTube, it's as simple as copying the URL directly from the address bar. In most other cases, you will be able to right-click on a video (or if you're on your mobile device, hold your finger on the video for several seconds) and a menu should pop up with an option to show, or copy, the video URL.
If neither of these options work for your choice of video share site, there is usually an option on the video's page to 'share' or 'embed', which will then provide you with a code you can copy and paste into your post.

Happy video taking! I hope to see plenty of your own videos up soon, and do feel free to ask if you need me to clarify any of these steps for you!
Now let's see some tanks!
