So I was looking at my Fluval C4 filter and was thinking what I can toss into the chemical chamber. I don't use carbon ever so I was wondering what other media people were using. Should I just toss more bio media in there and make it a nitrate factory? Just curious as to what other people are using for their stages of filtering.

No chemical filtration whatsoever in my tanks. I keep carbon around, should I ever need it to get rid of medicines or something, but my focus is around 90% biological filtration, and 10% mechanical filtration (I am not super bothered by particles floating around in my water).
My Fluval 406 is one stage sponge, three stages ceramic rings. No way in hell I'll ever need that much surface area, lol, but it is what's most important to me.

I'm with you there. I'm going to start putting a sponge over the intakes of my HOB filters. That way, I won't have to keep cleaning the crud out of the filters... they won't clog and will just do the biological filtration. Water changes will take care of the nitrates. I use undergravel filters in any tanks with gravel so the crud gets pulled to the bottom and gets vacuumed with water changes. I don't see a use for chemical so I'm just going to put some more biomax media with some filter floss cut to size.

If you are going to put a sponge on the inlet of your hob, keep an eye on your flow rate from your filter as the sponge collects debris. it will go down and thus could lead to shortening the lifespan of your filter. That could all depend on the type of sponge you use as well. Just an FYI.

I think what I'll do is shift the sponge so that it's not covering all of the intake holes. Leaving some open should protect against running dry in case the sponge does get totally clogged due to negligence on my part.

Poly Filter, A product I have used in the past with great success. Rachel O'Leary has a good video about Poly Filter but could not figure out how to get it to this page. If someone could post her video it would be greatly appreciated. Its on You Tube Rachel O'Leary, My Secret Weapon, Poly Filter. Thanks Keith

I see she uses it in fish bags for shipping. What a great idea if the fish will be in the bags for a long period of time it will absorb waste and ammonia. Will have to bring a piece of Poly Filter on the Toronto Bus trip. Would also work well in the fish bags at the auctions, fish sit in those bags for such a long time the water seems to get so nasty

Yikes, it's like $15 CDN for a 4" x 8" sheet. I guess I'll look at the US websites for these, lol.

More bio or a poly filter I have the same issue with my canister too mch room no enough media to put in it. I started using purigen in my FX6 I must say I'm not going back. Absolutely love it and it's rechargeable. Take a look into it. It might be something to try
