I found myself cleaning my aquaclear 70 every couple weeks when I noticed that the media was continuously needed to be cleaned. I keep my LED lighting on for approximately 12hrs. I finally decided to put dark plastic sheeting between the pump and the tank to stop this from happening. All pumps should be blackened out to stop this. WHY?

I have never had algae growing in my aquaclear HOB filters. I have my lighting on from 7pm to 11pm - about 4 hours.

True enough. Any funk that washes out of my AquaClear media is fish poop or expired plant matter. The intake tube might get algae, but I scrub it out with a bottle cleaner once in a while and no big deal.
Do you have a background? Most filters are separated from the aquarium lights with a background, since most people don't like seeing the wires and whatnot when they look through their tank.
Every couple weeks is not too often to swish out your media, especially if you find your filter flow is slowing down. I swish mine out monthly. Also, 12 hours is a lot of time for the lights to be on. You can absolutely back off on that until the algae no longer gets enough light to grow.

My lights are suspended above the tank, I also get some algae growth in the Aqua Clear on the tanks that are set up this way. I put a black vinyl sticker on the lid of the one A/C that had heavy algae growth and that stopped it for the most part

Both great ideas that Xander and freshwater gave you! However I still think that 12 hours of continuous lighting is too much! My lights are on from 5:30 am to 9 am and again from 4pm to 9pm! This way plants get enough light for great growth, however algae needs a lot more continuous light period!
