Hello everyone! Because of next months speaker ( Frank Aguirre ) enthusiasm about biotope tanks, I decided to try my hand in them! First off I realized that I have way too many fish that I want to put in a biotope! Such as hillstream loaches, panda garras, green neons, emerald rasboras, celestial pearl danios, etc.... So I could not possibly have everything I would like, because of space restrictions, that is not yet!!!! But that is going to be another post! So back on topic. Recently I acquired a nice group of corydoras pygmeaus, and from past experiences I know that I can not keep them alive for long in my existing tanks. So I put them in a quarantine 10 gallon tank! As time went by they got joined by a group of CPD’s and a school of green neons. Well it was a QT tank after all right!? lol what a joke! Soon I started researching the natural habitat of the Pygmy Cory’s and slowly the QT turned into a full setup! Now I know I need to take out the other fish, and some of the plants to make it a 100% true biotope, however it is a start! I will relocate all the fish, shrimp, and plants with time and more research, but it is what it is for now! Let me know what everyone thinks!

For a true biotope I also have to replace the leaf litter🍁! I guess I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I really like the look of the tank! I think I might convert a few of my planted tanks to “biotope” looking tanks!!! However for true biotopes I have to do a ton of research!

I feel that it makes it a lot less daunting to remember that a biotope is likely to only have one type of rock, one type of substrate, and one or two types of plant at most (if any!!) -- less is more! This may be a good place to start, for your research: biotopeworld.wordpress.com/2013/03/31/madeira-river-biotope/

Thanks Xander!
The large rock is only there to hold down the wood until it becomes waterlogged!

Nice looking tank regardless if it's a true biotope tank or not . Only 7 months until the competition so time to work out the bugs.

From what I saw on Saturday Gabe, you are off to a great start.
Darn you as well, now I have to setup one of my small tanks for at least shrimp. Sigh. Funny how the tables have changed... before it was me influencing you...

Well I think things just turned interesting! I did a 50% water change with rain water, put in two large oak leaves, and got a black water tank by today! I mean I can not see the plants in the tank, never mind the fish! Here is a close up! I find this very intriguing! Kind of wish I had a Ph probe! Wonder how much the it changed over night! Just hope the fish will be okay, have no RO or rain water left! Tomorrow I will do another water change with RO water and see what happens! I really hope the fish and shrimp will be okay until then!
