Good evening all!
I have been toying with the idea of starting a thread where we can keep track of live food culturing. Members can put down what and exactly how they culture live food for their fish!
It was time for me to move my white worm culture to a larger container, so I thought I start with that!
White worm culture
For those who don’t know, here are a couple of pictures of white worms.
First picture is my pea puffers enjoying their white worm dinner!
And this is a well established, great producing culture.
Now you can see from the above picture that I was not far away from an overproducing culture. Which means it would produce more worms than I could feed up to my fish. That is very undesirable since eventually there would be so many worms that they would die and foul the whole culture.
So here is what I did. First off I needed some good soil to keep the worms in! Found this at WallMart under $6.
Next I needed some used aquarium water, and since the worms will not be bothered by fish waste, I decided to do a water change on my pleco fry.
Now I needed a larger box, luckily I had some containers left from when I was breeding dart frogs! So here is a picture to see the size difference! On the right is my existing culture!
I mixed the soul with the aquarium water, until the soil stick together like a snow ball when I squeezed it.
I added half my culture to the new container, however I only filled up 1/4 of the container with worms! This is how thick the worms were in the soil. And this is how much I filled up! I did this because when the box is full of worms it is time to split the culture again. It will take about a year for the worms to fill up the new container. I added a stitching mesh where I feed the worms, and for easy access to the worms when I want to feed the fish!
I feed my worms multi grain Cheerios soaked a bit in water!
And a few hours later there is lots of activity!
Hope you enjoyed the first segment of the live food cultures thread!
