So I have a 55 gallon heavily planted tank that has been completely green for 6 weeks. All of my water parameters are normal and despite keeping the curtains closed and doing total blackouts for up to 5 days at a time there is still no change! I have 9 tanks with the same water/lighting/substrate and ferts that are crystal clear. I have never had persistant floating algae like this before! So...after a lot of research I have come up with two solutions...a diatom filtration system or a UV sterilizer. I am leaning toward a submersible UV system that I saw online for 65.00 on sale. Has anyone has a UV sterilizer before? How does it effect the good bacteria in my tank? Will it remove all the nutrients for my plants as well? Any input is good. thanks!

The only thing I know about this is that it will kill all algae in the water and will not remove plant nutrients.

Have you looked into what a new bulb for that system will cost? It also doesn't solve 'why' you're having it. You should figure that out first.

The tank is in my dining room where there is a patio door and therefore gets too much light, even when the curtains are closed. I noticed the difference when daylight hours increased in the spring. I can't move the tank as there is nowhere else to put it due to my home being one entirely open space. I ended up buying a 50.00 cheapie UV sterilizer and it is the best thing I could've done. In 3 days the water is sparkling clear. I am completely satisfied and the submersible unit can be used to cure parasites in the water if needed or clear up any of my other tanks if the need arises.

it was purchased at www.petsandponds.com and cost 55.99 +tx. It says it does up to a 53 gallon tank, I have it on my 55 and it did an outstanding job of clearing the tank of floating algae that was so thick you couldn't see anything inside. Here is the info to the product, it says there are none in stock but somehow he sent me one, call first: AA Internal 9 Watt Low Voltage UV Sterilizer (Item Currently Unavailable) Item Code: BURGA6670

That is awesome Amy. I am considering this for my 55 for disease or parasite control as well as water quality great and clear.

I will get an after. I didn't take a before because it was pretty hideous! It was totally thick with floating algae and now it is the cleanest water I have ever seen. I would consider drinking it it is so clean!
