Anyone know where I can get a starter colony. What has your experience keeping them long term?
Thanks in advance, Aaron

A good source for daphnia is the top of pools before they take their cover off .

I have a couple outdoor tanks and a swimming pool that I use to breed fish in the summer, all of these start to produce daphnia every spring. Pretty soon the numbers will be enough to feed all my indoor tanks everyday and supply a bunch of club members with starter cultures. As for care I dont do anything for them. I never feed them or do anything to care for them while they're outside. I have tried to keep a culture going inside for the winter and I found that feeding live yeast gave me the best results. I mix the yeast with water and and poor it into the daphnia tank to make the water cloudy, once the water clears up I do it again. I also kept the tank on my basement floor without a heater so it stayed in the 60's. I hope this helps and once the daphnia exploding out back I will post on the forum for anyone that wants a culture

Ok thanks. I should be able to get some wild stuff in my back yard soon but was wondering if there was a difference between them and the magna or others I'd seen for sale in the past besides size

They still require the same environments though Magna requires more resources when it comes to food due to the their larger size.
Also. D.magna takes a bit longer to attain total size. Their care, feeding (as to dietary), reproduction are all the same. D.magna are more popular due to their larger size which makes them more "visible".

...one more thing (having a Colombo moment), DO NOT use Tap Water. Chlorine and Heavy Metals will spell certain death for your culture. If you plan to start your own indoors, use RO, RO/DI and greenwater.

They started producing about three weeks ago. So far I have enough to feed every second day. I feed them yeast just to get more out of the culture.

Left the cardboard tubing inside a canister filter I purchased. I ran the filter like this for a few months, greening the water most excellent. It is all in my journal, Taking the Plunge, Office Space II
