I was so mad last night. I did my routine water changes, condition it and everthing... about an hour later half of my cichlids in the 180 was wipe out so was my 55 females tank. Big red is not doing so well at the moment. Luckly I took Butch out of the 180 n in his own 20g tank. Very irritated to not know whats is in the water that causing my fishes to drop like flies. I couldnt catch it in time cause I was doing some errands after the water change. When I got home it was too late. My best show fishes is done besides big red and butch and a red german. Was so mad I was bout to smash the whole tank... im down to alot of fishes now and its not easy to restock with the same fishes...

thornoun, that's just totally devastating , I don't even know what to say. Hopefully the rest of your fish survive and you are able to restock. You are the 2nd person who is mysteriously loosing fish, as andynater is loosing his Brochis splendens one by one for no apparent reason. The thing is you and him are on two different water systems. Very confusing. Les

Omg. That's seriously bad news. Since you suspect its something in the water you can't even fix the problem with a water change. All I can suggest is add prime to the water which IMHO is the best water condirioner. Then add lots of carbon to your filter.
I was going to do my regular WC today. I think I'll hold back a bit.
To other forum members: Please post if you have done a successful WC today.

Ive had rough 2 weeks as well lost 7 fish total.
Go to a gas station or b place where you filk 5 gal jugs and get ro water, then you can change some of it out.

This is some very crappy news Thorn. I am sorry to hear about it but I can relate. I also had some loss lately I was dealing with. But I know sometimes we get major blows. Just keep on trucking.

Nothing wrong with leamington water as far as I know. I had just realized that you were on a different supply to mine. Sorry to have mislead you. If anything, its the Windsor water that is to change sometime when they discontinue flouride addition.
I can't think of any advice for you except what Andy suggests and buy a few 5 gallon containers of purified water.
I don't know how you change your water, but is there any chance of bucket/hose contamination? I don't think you inject co2 right? So it can't be asphyxiation. Did you recently regenerate purigen? That can cause problems if you use an amine based conditioner.

I use a hose and gravel cleaner for my wcs and its used and put into a grocery bag and put away. And the waters put back into my tanks with a 5 gal water jug.
I dont think its a contamination because its only the emerald corys affected so far.

I dont know guys big red just laying at the bottom and I dont think I can enter butch for the next meeting cause he started to fade his colors... im kinda at a lost at the moment, maybe I can try n put butch in the females tank so he can obtain his breeding colors again? But then again I dont trust that water too, and keep buying gallons and gallons of purify water sounds like a lot of work for a 55 gallon tank not to mention a 180 gallon too. June meeting is just around the corner and my pride show males are slipping away...sigh. im just gonna enter butch faded colors or not I still have pride in him.

Well, if it was the bucket, it means the tap water is safe. I'd do 3 or 4 major water changes, right after each other. The idea is to dilute the contaminant to safe levels. For example, if your toxin is 10 ppm now, after 2 80% WC, it will be 0.4 ppm and after another 2 water changes it will drop to 0.016 ppm.
I don't know what your level of contamination is, nor at what level it would be safe, the numbers above just illustrate the power of multiple water changes. The higher the %WC, the better.
