Hey guys
Where in Windsor could I locate White Sand. Do you know of a store that carries this regularly, and about how much does it cost?
I have heard of using sand box sand, as well as pool filter sand - have you ever heard of this?
Thanks!

I use pool filter sand. Its the perfect grain size, not to small to compact and not to large to collect dirt and waste. Most pool stores retail it for about $10 for 50 pounds. And not getting a better deal on sand than that. Also its nearly fully rinsed and clean. You only need to do some minor rinsing and your good to go. Hope this helps.

Ive got pfs in my shrimp tank. Carib black sand in my cichlid tank and white sand in my community tank.
I like them all. Only thing I would change is the white sand is fine almost powdery so if you stir it up gets bit cloudy.
if price isnt an issue go with the look you like best

Where would I get black sand I did a tremendous amount of searching for black sand locally, and the best I could do was the National Geographic brand from PetSmart. It's not a great price point at a dollar per pound. If you don't mind going Stateside, you can find medium grit Black Diamond sand blasting sand at a TSC for incredibly cheap. There are mixed opinions on whether or not it's belly safe, but the people who use it with loaches and cories swear by it. Menards carries another coal slag product called Black Beauty, though it's not as loved as Black Diamond.

This is what I used in my 225 gallon tank. www.durock.ca/sfinish.htmlIt's the additive that goes into stucco for the colour and type of effect they want. You do need to rinse well since the colour bleeds off the stuff. It looks like sand. The colour does stay. My fish have been in that tank with that substrate for over 7 years. You can pick all sorts of colours. The builder I got this from looked at me funny when I ordered it for a fish tank, but it came highly recommended at the time. It's not something I would have thought of. What it says on my 5G pail is this: Durock Interior/Exterior Textured Protective Coating. CCMC 12969-R

I used pool filter sand but had to take it out due to the fact that it was harboring ammonia for me as soon as I took it out I noticed a drop in ammonia and after 2 days there was almost none.

I am surprised that the sand was harboring ammonia. I rake it right to the bottom at least once a month to make sure that gasses are released I have never had ammonia issues with sand

Ok I'm new here but have had tanks for along time. If you want white sand you go to a pool supply company and perchase it their but if you want black sand you go to the target store on 42 right across from the airport and get sandblasting sand but you have to be specific and tell them it's for an aquarium. Not at all sandbasting sand is the same. The sandblasting sand can cut the mouths of the fish and that's why you need to be specific to what you are doing with it. I used both and had no trouble with it just clean before putting it in the tank. Good luck.

Aw man, where were you a year ago?? The only sandblasting sand I could ever find in the city was copper slag; I haven't been able to find coal slag anywhere...
