So im getting tired of buying all my media for my hang on back filters and them costing an arm and a leg.
Anyony know of online stores or any where else I can get cheap or cheaper replacement medias? They are mostly for tetra filters with the ovalish cages.

I hadn't bought any filters in over a year and water was always clean. I've switched to sponge and scrubbies in my HOB filters and no longer by anything.

What filter media are you replacing? Is it just the sponges or is it a combo item?

For sponges I just continue to reuse after rinsing.
However I think the finer polishing sponge blocks up and reduces flow after a month or so. For those I have been using a few layers of batting, and just replace it after use since its so cheap. I'm not 100% sure that batting is fine enough though, so I'd also like to know what others use as their polishing sponge.

In my hob filters which I use 2 of. 1 in the shrimp tank which never needs changing really i rinse it and go on. But the problem one is my tetra ex 70 I have on my 30 gal. Its 2 of the large oval ones that go inside the cages and before them are the "bio" section which I can just rinse in the water.
How would I go and replace them with sponges?
I never did think though I use the 2 layer batting in my canisters which I cut to size for those bins. I suppose I could do the same and put it inside the cages. And forgo the carbon inside of the pads which are meant for it.
Hows that sound?
Also I rinse and rinse all my pads basically until they wont rinse out anymore and are too clogged.
