So I come home from work today, and as I am going around feeding the fish and shrimps I get to my Crystal red tank and they are all but 3 are dead!!! I have no idea what happened, they were all right yesterday and dead today! I did not do water change, did not top up, nothing.... I am very frustrated about this! I think maybe there is a stray current in the tank... I unplugged everything and moved the leftover shrimp, but I think they are all goners! Sometimes I just hate this hobby...... LOL...

Wow, very sorry to hear this, sometimes our hobby can be very frustrating . But at the same time it only makes our successes that much sweeter.. Keep plugging away...

The downs in the hobby can be very frustrating. But the up's and rewards feel just that much better. I had many losses and failures but also many successes. Never give up and you will figure it all out.

It is well. This is just a learning experience that we all have at some point. You'll bounce back better than ever!

gabor if it is stray current you can typically measure it if not even feel it
Heaters are the usual suspect.
Just another thought however. Do you feed that tank the same food as others?
I hope the last 3 make it but you don't make it sound very promising.
Better days ahead.

Thanks guys for the kind words, and encouragement... Today my wife noticed a film on top of the water where the shrimp were. it is like an oil buildup.... Never had this before, and I do not know where did it come from! In a day it was just there! I highly suspect that this is what caused the die off. Anyone had this before? I feed the same food in all my tanks, none of them has this film on them! I was even thinking maybe unwashed hands in the tank, but I did not do any maintenance since last Tuesday. Well it is very strange! I have black sand for substrait, it was in there for 3 months, all the plants in there were transferred from my other tank 3 months ago, filter washed in the old water after the water change on last Tuesday. No idea where the film came from!

I cant help you with what caused the film but I suspect something was on your hands maybe when placed in the tank. But I can help you remove the film. Simply take regular newspaper and lay it across the water surface and pull it back out as it takes the film with it. A little trial and error with this technique and you have it mastered. Best of luck.

Thank you! I was wondering how to remove it! I'm guessing this happened to you before?

Yes I had it happen before in a newly set up 5.5 gallon tank a while ago. So I also had to find a solution. But at the time the forum never existed and neither did the club to ask for help. lol.

Does the tank have a top? Is it near the kitchen at all? Using any of those spray air freshener things? Kids?
The list goes on. Air pump ok? Windows open that day?
How about carbon, do you run any on that tank? Some believe that carbon can release contaminants if it is left too long.
Sorry if you don't want to be peppered like this. My thinking here is that you are not a novice but yet this has happened. It can be a learning experience for all of us. Lots of new aquarists don't always realize how a simple thing like rinsing your hands can make a big difference.
Did anyone make it BTW?

Thanks Guppy Guy!
Oldmanriver- I do not mind the " peppering" I'm stumped, so any ideas help!!! The tank is upstairs, and not near the kitchen. Air fresheners we do not use because we also have pet birds, and they are very sensitive to that stuff! If the kids did something AGAIN, I won't have them for long...LOL Windows are open all the time! The tank is right by the window too!!! This one is possible!!! Never heard the carbon release contaminants except if it is washed in salt water....Releasing ammonia I think.. How often should be changed? the tank was running for 3 months, carbon is the same age.... Another possibility!!!
There are three shrimps that survived! I think there is two males and one female! Oh well, we will see!!!

If you are going to use carbon change it out monthly. After that it starts losing its effectiveness anyways. And being near a open window sound more like the culprit now.

Ah, so you want the pepper. LOL Carbon at 3 months is over it's limit according to what I understand to be the case. As GG states 1 month is about it. I'd say that is a possible cause. Open windows are normally good but if you have a neighbour spraying something who knows.
Glad to hear the 3 pulled through.

I'm thinking now that it was a combination of things! The open window for sure, but I am leaning towards the carbon and kids combo...
